The two standards for emergency exit devices, DIN EN 179 – Emergency exit devices with handles - and DIN EN 1125 - Emergency exit devices with horizontal bars – were introduced from 01.04.2003 as European standards. They can be used as emergency exit devices and are regarded as equal to the familiar "panic locks". There is no statutory requirement in Germany to use these exclusively (see: Building Rules List A, edition 2011/1- Part 1, serial no 6.22/6.23).
The hardware used for an emergency exit system must be tested as a complete unit (lock, hardware and accessories) and sold with a CE mark. The processor is obliged to check the compatibility of the lock sets, hardware and accessories with the help of the certificates of conformity from the lock manufacturers.
